South Overland Park is an up-and-coming part of the Kansas City metro area. Like any growing region, it needed reliable transportation. To accommodate this growth, we partnered with the City of Overland Park to transforming Quivira Road into a two-lane, median-divided thoroughfare with the ability to expand to four lanes in the future.
We transformed Quivira Road into a two-lane, median-divided thoroughfare with the ability to expand to four lanes in the future.
Covering 2.5 miles of roadway from 159th Street to 179th Street, many of Quivira’s amenities will benefit Overland Park commuters. Four bridges carry traffic over Coffee Creek, with one pair over the creek and one pair over its tributary. The corridor configuration also included three roundabouts.
We saved the city money upfront by designing an expandable roadway that imposes fewer pavement and storm sewer costs. Since the project called for concrete pavement, we designed the jointing pattern to function now and in the eventual expansion, which is expected in ten to twenty years.
The majority of this project’s utilities were relocated before construction, with the exception of water. The team decided to incorporate the construction of the WaterOne facility and distribution mains with the road project bid for simpler phasing and scheduling.
