Colorado Springs, Colorado (October 26, 2022) – Karen Aspelin, technical leader for Olsson’s Transportation team in Colorado, was named Transportation Professional of the Year for the Colorado/Wyoming Section of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE). Aspelin received the award during the organization’s recent luncheon.
The Transportation Professional of the Year Award recognizes notable professionalism and achievements by a section member during the previous calendar year. Winners are selected for leadership or activities on a specific project, technical leadership provided to an organization, research or published thought leadership, service to ITE or a local section or volunteer service that promotes transportation engineering.
Aspelin joined Olsson’s Colorado Transportation team in October 2021 and works out of the firm’s newly opened office in Colorado Springs. Olsson is a nationally recognized engineering and design firm.

Aspelin represents the Mountain District on the ITE International Board of Direction and serves as vice chair for ITE’s K-12 science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) committee. She formerly served as president of ITE’s New Mexico Section and Western District.
She has more than 25 years of experience in transportation engineering and has served as the lead traffic engineer and project manager for a wide variety of projects in Colorado and throughout the Southwest. Aspelin holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Virginia and a master’s degree in civil engineering from Texas A&M University.
