How traffic engineering helps people get home safely

Karla Diaz-Corro doesn't direct traffic in the middle of the road or construct the road. These are common misconceptions she debunks as a traffic engineer.

She tells friends to think about the road striping, how wide the lanes are, and crossing traffic safely. These are all typical parts of her day.

"What I value in projects are accessibility and safety," she said. "When we work in safety, we hear a lot of statistics. And every time I hear a statistic...we're talking about real people. At the end of the day, [traffic engineers] implement solutions to reduce those statistics."

Karla joined our Traffic team in 2021 after receiving a bachelor's and master's degree in civil engineering from the University of Arkansas.
