For the past two decades, the City of Colorado Springs has invested in advancing its traffic signal control and management system to improve roadway capacity management. To ensure the system’s long-term sustainability and security, the city turned to Olsson for system maintenance, design, traffic engineering, software assessment, and software development.
Notably, Colorado Springs has implemented radar-based vehicle detection at intersections, surpassing traditional methods. This innovation allows precise tracking of vehicles up to 500 to 600 feet (900 feet for trucks) from intersections, optimizing signal timing and reducing unnecessary stops, thus benefiting the environment.
Our work began with equipment maintenance and continues to include traffic management software upkeep. We collaborate with city staff and developers to assess the system, recommend short-term improvements, and identify long-term enhancements. Our scope encompasses software code review, field evaluations, and regular review sessions. Our project was on schedule and within budget, earning the city’s satisfaction. Beyond assisting the city, this project contributes to safer roadways for all.
