We provided final design services for El Mirage Road from Northern Avenue to Cactus Road for Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT). This project included intersection improvements at Olive Avenue, Peoria Avenue, and Cactus Road.

The roadway improvements for this 3-mile project included widening the existing road to a six-lane facility with a raised median. Services included collecting research/data; preparing as-built plans, horizontal/vertical control, right-of-way strip maps and utility map base files, legal descriptions, base maps, roadway plans, earthwork cross-sections, utility coordination, on- and off-site hydrology and a drainage report; and designing on-site storm system drainage.

El Mirage Road improvements were tied to the overall Northern Parkway improvements that were still underway at the time by MCDOT. Several adjacent private parcels were developed before the current city development standards were approved and did not have space for an aboveground retention basin without significant impacts to their current facilities and operations. Our solution was to design an underground retention system that met the city’s drainage requirements and avoided significant impacts to the existing development.
