Helping Joplin's Main Street recover from the 2011 tornado

Joplin, Missouri sustained was devastated by an EF-5 tornado in May 2011. Infrastructure across the community was badly damaged. Shortly thereafter, the city received Community Development Block Grant Disaster Relief funding assistance from the federal government to assist in its recovery.

Part of this funding was used to enhance the beauty of Joplin's Main Street, with new sidewalks, curbing, street lighting, stormwater improvements, and major street intersection upgrades. We worked along a stretch of the street to ensure infrastructure complied with the Americans with Disabilities Act requirements.

The work included new sidewalks, curbing, street lighting, stormwater improvements, and intersection upgrades.

We also provided decorative enhancements, like benches, trash receptacles, landscaping, and environmentally-friendly LED lighting. We helped contact nearly 100 business owners for the acquisition of right of way along with permanent and temporary construction easements. The street's sidewalk system ties into the city’s overall hub-and-spoke trail system to help pedestrians access all city amenities, from parks to shopping to government offices. This approximately $7.5 million project was fully constructed in 2017.
